Summer School for Secondary School Teachers Working in Australia and New Zealand

The European Studies Summer School for 2012 seeks to explore and explain the complexities of European integration, as well as the diversity of cultures and political and economic systems in Europe. This three-day intensive residential study will provide participants with a wide array of accurate and up-to-date resources and the opportunity to engage with academic experts, policy-makers and diplomats. The Summer School is taught from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective.

Topics to be covered include:

• History of European integration
• The Eurocrisis: facts and fictions
• Our European classical heritage (including a visit to ANU Classics Museum)
• Islam in Europe
• Immigration and cultural diversity
• The EU political system
• EU-Australia relations

There will be a series of talks hosted by Ambassadors at European Embassies as well as opportunity for participants to pursue research at one of the major national cultural institutions in Canberra as part of the study experience. The School is especially relevant to teachers working in History, Social Science & Environment, Philosophy, English, Business & Economics, European languages, and the Arts. Participation is free and most meals will be provided.

The European Studies Summer School is an initiative of the Australia and New Zealand EU Centres Network. The 2012 School is jointly-hosted by the ANU Centre for European Studies and the Monash European and EU Centre, with assistance from the European Commission.

Eligibility:
Attendance is free for all teachers working in Australian and New Zealand secondary schools (high schools and colleges), however places are limited. Please submit a CV and a short cover letter describing the anticipated benefit of the School your professional development to Europe@anu.edu.au by 1 January 2012.

Bursaries:
Bursaries for accommodation and travel are available for Australian and New Zealand applicants. Deadline for bursary applications is 1 January 2012. Late submissions will not be considered. The amount of travel funding is dependant on flight distance to Canberra. Australian-based applicants are eligible for 3 nights accommodation at ANU Halls of residence and New Zealand applicants are eligible for 4 nights.
